i'm zoraida sambolin. it's 5:00 a.m. in the east. up first, we're learning more about the suspected gunman. 20-year-old michael brandon hill is in custody this morning. witnesses say the shooter told them he wasn't afraid to die. remarkably no one was injured in the shooting but as cnn's david mattingly telling us hundreds of students had the scare of their lives. >> reporter: hundreds of kids ages 4 to 10, running for safety as gunfire erupts inside the school. inside, the gunman tells them to call a tv station. >> i never discovered anything like this. he wanted to us start filming as police died. >> reporter: the gunman fired half a dozen times. officers returned fire when one office worker convinced him to surrender. >> i held him the whole time. because he actually wanted to go out and start shooting again.

i just started telling him my life story. asked him to put the weapons down. >> reporter: police searched the suspect's car for explosives. children had to be escorted away from the school as a precaution before being reunited with their anxious parents. parents claim about a lack of communication. most say they heard about it on local news. >> they said they put the school on lockdown and they secured the kids, the parents should have been called immediately right then and there. >> reporter: and there are new concerns about security parents are shaken about what could happen. >> they have a policy, they're supposed to show i.d. >> reporter: are you going to let your daughters go back to school? >> i don't want to. i want to home school them. >> reporter: students will be returning to classes today but at a nearby high school. they're not expected to return to their regular school building until tomorrow. david mattingly, cnn, dekalb

county, georgia. two minutes past the hour. the family of a man police say killed a family friend and abducted they are 16-year-old daughter is now asking for a paternity twist. they want to know if james dimaggio was more than just a family friend to hannah anderson, her brother ethan an her mother now that he's led and left a $120,000 life insurance policy to hannah anderson's grandmother. >> we've taken dna samples. we're going to be requesting from the anderson family to try and get a dna sample from hannah. and if they have anything left of ethan. we're going to get a dna sample, there's been a lot of rumors whether or not jim might be the father of either children. we find it strange that he's left all of this money without any explanation. >> police now say dimaggio used a timer to set fire to his home near san diego, some 20 hours after he took off with hannah. her mother and brother's bodies

were found inside of that burned-out home. now to the fire lines in idaho where an aerial assault appears to be helping slow the massive beaver creek fire. 1100 people still evacuated. about 50 miles away the little queens fire has led authorities to call for the evacuation of the mountain town of atlanta, idaho. many residents aren't leaving. they want to fight the fire. the fire has grown to 7,000 acres. it's not under control at all. >> indira petersons is tracking it for us. for that little queens fire, 70% said they're going to stay and fight that fire. that's incredible. >> incredible as conditions are worsening. a little bit of a mixed bag. what we're talking about, high winds picking up which, of course, could cause erratic fire behavior. due to a storm moving in so there is a chance of rain. you can actually see the red flag warnings in all the fire locations is this never a good

sign, but it does mean a change is on the horizon. today, even more chance for showers than we saw yesterday but that also enhances the chances for more lightning. of course, the strong winds that go along with any storm. and then rain. rain's a tricky one as well. if you have too much rain and the burn area you also have the threat of flooding. that's something that we're going to monitor, just the right amount of rain to help with the fires but not seeing the flooding concerns. speaking of flooding concerns, you have the water vapor satellite funneling into the southeast. the good news, stationary front finally on the move. we're slowly going to see -- >> yea! >> yeah, exactly right. one to two inches of rain today. still going to have rain in the southeast as we go through the weekend but it's more the typical afternoon thunderstorms instead of the heavy thunderstorms. speaking of a cold front in the midwest, pretty much iowa all the way to michigan. we'll start to see heavier storms. and it will push through the great lakes region and we're

the country. that was weeks ago. britain and germany are reopening their embassies in yemen as well. security forces in pakistan using 100 tons of metric bombmaking materials. terrorists taken into custody in the town of quetta. they found 80 tons ready to explode. we're hear from david miranda and this happened after the detention on sunday flying from berlin carrying materials bound for a filmmaker. he tells anderson cooper that authorities took his laptop, phone and questioned him for hours leaving him afraid of what might happen. >> they changed agents. playing good cop/bad cop, all of them was telling me if i did not

cooperate, i was going to jail. they did that for eight hours straight. they didn't let me get my lawyer. >> they're trying to interview him in the interview process and intimidate journalists and trying to get out out of the our job. >> british officials are defending the questioning say it was a matter of national security but greenwald who has written extensively about surveillance programs call it's it an overreach. the nsa still doesn't know exactly what former contractor edward snowden took and is now overwhelmed trying to get a handle on the damage he's brought. that's according to nbc news. the director of the agency insists they know the full amount of damage done. but nbc says two sources briefed on the matter says the nsa cannot determine just how many documents he took. we're getting back to breaking news from syria this

morning where there are reports of a massacre. a warning, some viewers may find these pictures very disturbing. it's not possible for cnn to independently verify the claims but activists say forces loyal to assad used chemical weapons. they say hundreds are dead and wounded. the syrian government denies all of these claims. arwa damon is live in beirut this morning. arwa, what do you know? >> reporter: it's very difficult to get accurate information out of syria, but the images that are emerging are absolutely horrific. in fact, most of so horrific, we can't air them. a lot of child images, child victims lying on the floor. doctors trying to recess tate them. no visuals that would indicate

any internal injury. one doctor cnn spoke to people are dying from asphyxiation. the doctors are really working under very primitive conditions as one can just imagine, they lack drugs needs in the case of a chemical attack. they are also say they go don't have enough oxygen. this is an area east of damascus, the syrian government denying it launched any sort of attack. those images are so difficult to look at. >> they are. you're telling us those aren't even the worst images and they are very disturbing. arwa damon, thank you. and coming up -- >> did you say -- >> no, i never said that, and you guys are all about gossip. >> maine's republican governor

>> welcome back. i'm zoraida sambolin. >> i'm christine romans in for john berman. >> and we have breaking news from syria. a warning some viewers might find these disturbing. rebels claim hundreds are dead after they say the government used chemical weapons against him. the assad regime deny this. and cnn cannot independently verify these claims either. arwa damon is tracking the latest developments in syria. arwa, what can you tell us? >> reporter: you know, and those image, not even the worst of it. there are many more that we actually cannot even broadcast. they are that disturbing. a lot of young victims in the most recent attack. the local coordination committees are saying that 660 people at least were killed. we've seen atrocious videos showing the lifeless bodies of little children. doctors desperately in some cases are trying to resuscitate them.

we don't see any external injuries. one doctor that cnn spoke to says he does believe this was a chemical attack. he personally believes it was sarin gas. no way for us to verify or authenticate that claim. but this is certainly a dreadful tragedy of epidemic proportions. there are other attacks in syria in the past, but none coming anywhere near the death toll we're hearing reported out of that country today. >> and arwa, this comes after u.s. chemical weapons inspectors are in the country. how might that play a role in what happens next? >> reporter: well, presumably, they're going to ask for permission to about this sis area. one of the neighborhoods that was affected by this alleged attack is actually not too far away from where they're believed to be staying in damascus. originally on their itinerary san area that is in aleppo

province to the north. but the scope and magnitude of this alleged attack most certainly is going to at least merit them asking the assad regime access to them. it would take cease-fire actions to enter them. it almost certainly a tragedy. >> let's talk about the red line, what might this mean for the red line that the obama administration has warned of, when it comes to chemical weapons? >> reporter: well, we've had reported chemical weapons in the past. we've heard president obama speaking about numerous red lines in the past. and nothing has changed the dynamics inside of syria. u.s. intelligence already has stated that they do believe that small-scale chemical weapons attacks already occurred in syria. they were saying that they do believe that they are sarin gas. the u.n.'s mission on this trip was not to verify who used

chemical weapons, but if they were used. that earlier report that i was just talking about did cause the u.s. to ever so slightly shift its policy towards syria. talking about sending in some weapons. but nothing that has significantly changed the dynamics on the battlefield. so again, we're going to have to wait and see how the white house decides to react to this most latest attack. hundreds of people killed among them, many, many children. >> arwa damon reporting live from beirut. thank you. egypt this morning is quiet, a far cry of how it looked a week ago, after sparked days of violence up to 1,000 dead. the u.s. is pulling back on claims it may have cut off some aid to the country. that, as the court is now set to review the detention of former leader hosni mubarak. his lawyers want him freed on bond as he awaits charges that he was complicent on the

killing. now the beaver creek wildfire was reached about 30% containments hundreds were allowed back in their homes. 1200 home, still evehicle waited. another fire about 50 miles away in the mountain town of atlanta, idaho. but some residents they are not leaving. the little queen's fire has grown to some 7,000 acres but folks say they're staying put. >> they want to fight that fire themselves. a wildfire in yosemite shut down. the rim fire has burned more than 10,000 acres across steep, difficult terrain. residents said they had little time to get out of the way as the fire grew. >> the fire came right over the tom of us. you think you're having more time. three quarters of a mile. not very long. 15 minutes was generous.

>> 15 minutes. 2500 are threatened by the rim fire which is zero percent contained. all right. so apparently you're not imagining it. it winds up mosquitos are biting a bit more this summer. maybe they're not biting you but there are a lot more mosquitos. blaming the heavy rains that fell earlier in the year has given the mosquitos a place to lay the eggs. and that led to an explosion. >> my poor children, they close their eyes, plug their nose, and i just spray them. mosquitos are horrible. indeeria petersons watching the weather for us. >> i do want to start with cabo. a lot of people vacation in cabo. and there's actually a disturbance in the pacific. 40% right now. 80% chance in the next five days that we see development and expect it to move to the northwest. north-northwest kind of. basically, all you need to know

as this guy moves through, notice 70ss. by thursday and friday, a lot of 70s. perfect conditions for everyone at least in the northeast. >> if you like the 70s. >> oh, no, we are not explain right now. >> thank you, indira. the accused gunman in the decatur, georgia, elementary school is behind bars. there he is. authorities say 20-year-old michael brandon hill a convicted felon entered the school with weapons. students could be seen raising out of the building. escorted by their teachers raising to safety. the shooter exchanged fire with the police before a school employee face-to-face with the gunman. a school employee kept her with the witts about her. >> he actually went outside and started shooting again. i just started telling him my life story. asked him to put the weapons down.

and i told the police he was giving himself up. >> wow. remarkably, no one was jurisdiction. the grade school students will attend class at a nearby high school and return to their own school tomorrow. >> that antoinette tuff. she's a hero. three oklahoma teenagers have been charged in the shocking killing of a college baseball player from trailsia. 15-year-old john edwards jr., 15-year-old changes luna first first degree murder charges as adults. and 17-year-old michael jones is accused of being an accessory to the crime. prosecutors say they shot christopher lane in the back while he was out for a jog. the motive, police say, was boredom. one of their parents didn't want to speak to the media at the arraignment on tuesday. >> is there anything you want to say about your son, ma'am? >> no, i don't want to say no more. >> i want to do everything i can

to make sure these three thugs pay for. >> prosecutors say the 15-year-old danced and laughed when he was arrested. the 16 has refused to cooperate. both charged as adults. in iowa, an escaped inmate is dead this morning shot by a man he had taken hostage. police say rodney long broke into a home in bedford monday night. inside were 70-year-old jerome and his wife caroline. the thief had woke them up, grabbed the shotgun that jerome kept in the house. jerome was able to grab the shotgun back and shoot the escaped inmate killing him. >> i hate to say it, that's the way i hoped it would end. i think jerry did what any honest person would do.

>> he escaped from the prison shortly before that. he stole a patrol car and obviously people in the area were worried about this situation. jerome had loaded that shotgun to protect his family. >> and that deputy is recovering, we're happy to report. and a student athlete facing charges in connection with a sex assault case. chris boyd is accused of helping at an attempts cover-up of a rape at a dorm. four vanderbilt football players were charged with that rape. police say the student was unconscious. in florida, soundly rejected, the state house not getting anywhere near the yes votes needed for a special session. protesters upset with the george zimmerman case verdict were upset.

lawyers for shelli martin will be in court. shelli zimmerman is not expected to attend this hearing. a spike in shark attacks prompting officials in hawaii to study the movement of tiger sharks. there were ten attacks in hawaii. eight this year. last week, a 20 lost her arm during a snookling trip off the coast of maui. it includes tagging and tracking some of those tiger sharks. one nevada community has a bear problem, and they say they cannot solve it because of animal rights activists. officials at incline village near reno said a bear broke into their home tuesday morning in broad daylight. and the family found the bear hanging out in the kitchen. it's the latest incident involving a bear hitting homes in that community. the state wants to trap and relocate the bear. but the families are saying no
